The closed stretch of Mysuru-Nanjangud road was reopened for traffic on Sunday.

A stretch of the road, which is also part of the National Highway 766 connecting Benglauru with Ooty, had been closed for traffic ever since the water from the swollen Kapila began overflowing on the road near Mallanamoole Mutt from Friday.

The Nanjangud police told The Hindu that the stretch was reopened for traffic from Sunday after the water receded.

The road was submerged after the Irrigation Department increased the discharge from Kabini reservoir to the rate of 80,000 cusecs on Friday.

From Sunday, the discharge of water from Kabini reservoir was brought down to 45,000 cusecs in view of a corresponding decrease in the inflow in the reservoir. The inflow into Kabini reservoir on Sunday was 52,150 cusecs on Sunday.

Srikanteshwara Temple

Meanwhile, the flood waters that had surrounded the famous Srikanteshwara Temple in Nanjangud town too had receded considerably on Sunday, bringing relief to a large number of devotees.

With the water level in the Kapila too decreasing substantially, the flooding of roads and areas surrounding the temple complex too had come down, bringing life back to normal in Nanjangud town.
