The accident on Tumakuru Road, in which a nine-year-old boy was killed on the spot on Sunday, has now claimed the life of his mother as well. Sunitha Kumar (28), mother of Likhith Gowda, who was run over by a bus, succumbed to her injuries on Friday at the Columbia Asia Hospital at Yeshwantpur.

Sunitha had suffered grievous head and internal injuries, including injuries on her right arm, in the accident that occurred when she was veering her two-wheeler away from a pothole. A private bus came from behind and knocked them down at the SRS Junction. Her son, who was riding pillion, came under the wheels of the bus while she suffered injuries.

On the day of the accident, Sunitha was riding to her brother’s house in Hesaraghatta for a puja. She was a homemaker, married to Kumar, a supervisor at a factory in Peenya. They were residents of Gayatri Nagar.

After the accident, an injured and inconsolable Sunitha attended the funeral of her son and then got admitted to the hospital for treatment, said the police.

Engineer arrested

Meanwhile, the Yeshwantpur Traffic Police arrested Shailesh, civil engineer working with Navayuga Engineering Company, on charge of causing death due to negligence.

The police had sought an explanation from National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI) as to why the highway was not maintained properly. NHAI replied that the road maintenance was undertaken by Navayuga Engineering Company on a 20-year contract.

Thimmaraju, the driver of the private bus that knocked the duo down, has been named as the prime accused in the FIR, while the engineer is named as the second accused, the police added.

The pothole on the highway was filled by the traffic police following a snap protest by the irate passersby.
