More rains for two more days

Citizens woke up to muggy weather on Monday as it continued to rain on and off through the day. The India Meteorological Department has forecast moderate rain in the city over the next two days.

An alert on Monday afternoon forecast widespread moderate to heavy rainfall in many parts of the city. The alert stated that the rains were likely to lash flood-prone and low-lying areas in central Bengaluru, Kadugodi, Hagaduru, Garudacharyalalya in Mahadevpura zone, Basaveshwaranagar, Maruthi Mandir in west zone, and parts of south, Rajarajeshwarinagar, and Bommanahalli zones.

Between 8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m., the city received 5 mm rainfall, while HAL received 37.4 mm and KIAL 33.4 mm rainfall.

G.S. Srinivas Reddy, Director of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, said some areas near Yelahanka and Kengeri received around 25 mm to 30 mm rainfall. “It will continue to rain in the night. Some stations may receive heavy rains, while most others can expect moderate rains,” he said.

He told The Hindu that owing to low pressure in Bay of Bengal, there would be widespread rains in many parts of the State, including South-interior Karnataka. He also said the south-west monsoon was still active and will only start withdrawing next month. That apart, lot of rain clouds were near the Kerala coast. “We will have to wait and see if a low pressure is formed in the Arabian Sea as well. If it does, more rains can be expected,” he added.

Heavy rains were witnessed in parts of the city towards early evening. As a result, many roads, especially those in the outer zones, were waterlogged, inconveniencing motorists. In a tweet, Shashidhar said the waterlogged Gunjur Road was owing to “disappearance of raja kaluves and lakes” and roads constructed without gradients. Satya Prasad tweeted about the flooded Panathur railway under bridge.

However, the eight control rooms of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) did not receive any major complaints, apart from a couple of treefall.

According to a spokesperson in Kempegowda International Airport, four domestic flights bound to the city had to be diverted to Chennai because of bad weather. The flights were due to land in KIA between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. The spokesperson said all the diverted flights later landed in KIA after the weather cleared up.
