Mob attack on Africans: No official complaint filed

Police officials have confirmed that no official complaint has been filed in the attack on Africans on Monday night in Bengaluru.

An angry mob chased and attacked the Africans on Monday night in Byrathi near Kothanur. For nearly three hours, the area was tense due to “riot-like-situation,” during which four persons from Ivory Coast and two policemen sustained injuries.

Police officials have not disclosed any other information and are downplaying the incident. Neighbours, though, have said that there has been simmering tension for sometime.

“Africans drink on the streets and roam in high-speed at night. They create a lot of problems,” said a neighbour, who believed the incident was triggered when a group of foreign students struck beer bottles against a house. Others have different versions, of two groups beating each other up in an inebriated state.

Africans, who remain oblivious and are too scared to talk, maintain that there has been no issue on their part.

Additional Commissioner P. Harisekharan said, “Animosity between locals and foreign nationals has led to the clash. There was no complaint; but we have been informed of the situation and have initiated suo motu action and inquiring into the details.”

Peace Committee meeting

Home Minister K.J. George told reporters that a suo motu case has been taken up by the police and that a Peace Committee meeting will also be held soon.

“We are bound to provide safety and security to everyone. No complaints have been filed so, but we will have a detailed probe into the matter,” he said, while inaugurating Cyber Lab at Forensic Science Laboratory here in Madiwala, Bengaluru.
