The State government has not yet decided on the proposal of Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to increase milk price by Rs. 4 per litre.
According to sources, the government is likely to take a decision only after the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) polls.
Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra said that the KMF Chairman has written to the government requesting a hike of Rs. 4 per litre in the price of Nandini milk and proposed distributing milk among schoolchildren five days a week against three days at present.
Mr. Jayachandra admitted that the cost burden on KMF has increased due to the expenditure on infrastructure. Milk production had increased to 69 lakh litres per day of which about 35 lakh litres was being consumed in the State.
The excess milk was being transported to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for turning into milk powder.
He said 4,000 litres was being transported every day to Hyderabad where it is sold for Rs 36 per litre.
Mr. Jayachandra said that he has asked KMF to improve its marketing efficiency and raise revenue.
