MHRD confirms IIIT at Raichur

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has given the official nod for the much-awaited Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Raichur. The ministry intends to make the institute functional by the coming academic year.

On Wednesday, the MHRD sent out a Letter of Intent announcing this to Chief Secretary Ratna Prabha and to the personal secretary of Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi.

This decision comes at the cost of scrapping plans for an IIIT in Kakinada in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. “It has been decided with the approval of the HRD Minister to start an IIIT at Raichur under PPP mode from 2018-19. IIIT Raichur will replace the earlier proposed IIIT at Kakinada,” the letter said.

The MHRD has now asked the State to ensure land (50 to 100 acres) for setting up the institute, apart from submitting a detailed project report. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar first announced the plan in 2016. In September, the government announced an in-principle agreement on the institute.
