An underpass in Muthyalamma Nagar in Mathikere has been out of bounds to motorists for the last six months. Filled to the brim with rain water, the underpass, which replaced a railway gate around nine months ago, has served no purpose to the residents of the area.

According to residents, all the rainwater has been stagnating at the underpass. With no provision for it to enter the drains, it has been stagnating there.

“After the recent heavy rains, there is at least 8 ft. water in the underpass. There are a lot of apartments around the underpass and many children play nearby. If a child enters the underpass, he/she will surely drown. It is very dangerous,” said Mahendra Singh, a resident here.

Lavanya, another resident, said despite repeated complaints no action has been taken. “A lot of people were using the underpass to reach J.P. Park and Bandappa Garden. From these parts too, people were using the underpass to reach M.H. Road. Now, motorists and pedestrians are forced to take narrow gullies to reach these areas,” she said.

Stating that she has written numerous letters to the BBMP asking for details of the contractor, J.P. Park Councillor Mamata Vasudev said, “I am yet to get any response from the BBMP. I have visited the place and know about the people’s suffering. The stagnant water has started stinking. I have asked the BBMP chief engineer to pump the water out. The problem will be addressed soon,” she said.
