The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will continue to dump garbage in landfills in Mandur for another six-seven months till the sanctioned private waste management projects start functioning.
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, city in-charge Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy said, “We have convinced residents of Mandur of the problems faced by the city corporation, residents of Bangalore and the need to allow dumping for another six-seven months. We promised them that waste will not be dumped later than six-seven months.”
Mr. Reddy said that a few private firms have commenced work on setting up plants for scientific disposal of 2,700 tonnes of waste. These plants would come up on the outskirts of the city and they would generate electricity by recycling waste.
Meanwhile, the BBMP has decided to identify places in Doddaballapur, Ramanagaram, Chickballapur, Kolar and Tumkur for dumping of waste generated in the city.
Mr. Reddy, Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana and BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan called on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday and briefed him about the steps taken by the corporation to tackle the garbage crisis.
Stating that laxity on the part of the officials would not be tolerated in clearing garbage, Mr. Reddy said that all divisional joint commissioners are responsible for timely disposal of waste. Five officials on deputation who showed lack of interest in BBMP work have been sent back to their respective parent departments.
A medical officer and two assistant executive engineers have been suspended for delay in clearing waste, Mr. Reddy said.
