A 41-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault his 12-year-old daughter at their residence at Gangondanahalli in Chandra Layout police station limits on Sunday night.

The accused had allegedly attempted to molest her around midnight when his wife and their younger daughter, aged 10, were asleep.

Speaking to The Hindu, the girl’s mother said she awoke on hearing her daughter calling out her name from the bathroom.

The woman said her husband had held the daughter in the bathroom. She then managed to push her husband into the hall and rushed out of the house with her daughters and locked the door from outside. “I then called up the police.”

The woman claimed that this was not the first time that her husband had behaved inappropriately with his daughter.

“Twice before, I observed him acting odd with her and had stopped him,” she said.

The couple, who are married for 15 years, have four children, including two boys, who were away at their grandparents’ place at the time of the incident. The father is said to politically connected, owing allegiance to a legislator in Bangalore.

The Chandra Layout police said the man had been remanded in judicial custody. The police also said that they would conduct a safety check on their residence.
