The High Court of Karnataka on Thursday asked the Principal Secretary, Medical Education Department, to come out with a proposal to make selection for postgraduate medical and dental courses “free from mischief”, particularly surrendering of seats at the eleventh hour for some consideration, and have a “transparent system” from 2016.
A Division Bench comprising Justice N. Kumar and Justice B. Sreenivase Gowda issued directions in this regard to Principal Secretary M. Lakshminarayana, who was present in the court during the hearing of petitions on issues related to counselling for the PG medical courses.
Pointing out that surrendering seats at the eleventh hour for “some consideration” is one such mischief being played every year, the Bench said a seat in a better medical college cannot be allowed to go to a less meritorious student through seat surrendering mischief as it would defeat the very object of admissions based on merit.
“The practice of persons/authorities making money from this mischief should go. In Bengaluru, everything is business. This (admissions to PG medical course) has also become a business …,” the Bench observed orally and adjourned further hearing.
