Main access road to international airport will be closed from June 10

Is expected to be re-opened to motorists by early 2021; traffic will be diverted

The main access road to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will be closed to the public from June 10. Instead, traffic will be diverted to the south access road (SAR), built parallel to the main access road, which is expected to be re-opened to motorists in early 2021.

The decision has been taken to facilitate widening of the main access road from four lanes to 10 lanes (five on each side).

In a press release on Thursday, the Bangalore International Airport Limited, operator of the airport, said that 1.4 km of the main access road will be closed for expansion.

Vehicles heading to the airport will have to take a right at the first roundabout after the trumpet interchange, and enter the south access road to reach the terminal.

Vehicles heading out of the airport from the departure gates will follow the existing exit path from the Terminal and head towards P6 parking to reach the SAR.

Those returning from the arrival gates will continue using the existing route towards SAR.

“To manage increasing cargo traffic, a secondary road leading to the cargo terminals will be widened to four lanes later this year. The trumpet interchange too will be expanded – from the existing three to five lanes on either side – without causing any disruption to traffic movement,” says the release.

A majority of the passengers travelling to the airport rely on cabs or private modes of transport.
