The Koramangala police have arrested a 25-year-old domestic help, who, along with her husband, allegedly stole 4 kg of gold and diamond jewellery, and two-and-a-half kg of silver articles from her employer.
The total value of the items is estimated to be about ₹1.5 crore. They were stolen over a period of a year-and-a-half. With the money they got from allegedly selling the jewellery, the couple bought a car, a bike and took a flat in Koramangala on a three-year lease by paying ₹30 lakh.
The couple — Reshma and Kiran Kumar, 28 — have two children.
Two years ago, Reshma had joined the household of Jayanth S. Beda, who owns a plastic factory in Bengaluru, as a maid. Kiran is an auto-rickshaw driver, said the police. The two allegedly hatched a plan to steal the jewellery of Mr. Jayanth.
They decided to steal one item at a time so that the theft would not be noticed immediately.
“Reshma knew every nook and corner of the house. She succeeded in stealing bits and pieces of gold and silver jewellery from the family’s lockers. She knew where they keys were kept. She would hand over the items to Kiran, who sold them in jewellery stores across the city,” said the police.
The couple ran out of luck recently when the family checked the locker. They realised that over 4 kg of diamond, gold and silver articles were missing.
Based on their complaint, the Koramangala police zeroed in on Reshma. After monitoring her movements for a few days, they took her into custody on Saturday for questioning.
“She confessed to the crime. Based on her statement, we arrested Kiran Kumar. We recovered 3.75 kg of gold and diamonds, and 2.5 kg of silver articles, a car and a motorcycle,” the police added.
The couple has been booked for theft and remanded in judicial custody.
