A 38-year-old senior executive of a private firm has filed a police complaint against Namma Metro after slipping and falling on the platform at Magadi Road metro station while trying to board a train.
Though the incident took place on March 6, the passenger, Janardhan P., filed the complaint on Tuesday April 16. He told the police that he was hospitalised and had to undergo numerous surgeries and treatment for the multiple injuries he sustained during the fall.
“On March 6, around 9.30 a.m., Mr. Janardhan was in a hurry to catch a train. He was rushing on the platform when he slipped on a newly-laid granite flooring,” said a police officer. He sustained a fracture on his right arm and dislocated his wrist for which he required surgery and metal implants.
In his police complaint, he said he had to take leave from work for an extended period and had to pay medical bills of over ₹2 lakh. He wrote to the managing director of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., the Chief Secretary of Karnataka and the Urban Development Department in the State and the Centre about the incident.
In his petition, he mentioned that the smooth and polished granite flooring is a design fault at all metro stations and poses a danger for passengers rushing to catch a train. He claimed that there were no signages to indicate that the floor is slippery so that passengers can exercise caution while walking on them.
He suggested that the metro authorities consider granite tiling with a flamed finish, as a rough texture doesn’t allow for slipping.
Based on his complaint, the Magadi Road police have booked the manager of Magadi Road metro station charging him under Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC.
The police are yet to obtain statements from BMRCL officials.
