In a freak accident at the site of underground Metro works, a 21-year-old contract labourer was crushed under the train which overturned due to loose soil at K.R. Market on Wednesday morning.
The victim Dilip Manjhi, of Jharkhand, was working at the South ramp of the underground section when the accident occurred. While unloading steel from the truck, the crane tilted due to loose soil below and fell on the ground. The worker, being by the side of the crane, was crushed and died on the spot, an official release from the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited, said.
The officials said that his parents have been informed and arrangements have been made by the contractor to send the body tomorrow by air to his hometown. Apart from making an ex-gratia payment to the family, the Contractor will also make other payments and compensations as per law. BMRCL has also released an ex-gratia amount of Rs. 50,000 to the next of kin as an immediate relief to the family, the release said.
Police have booked a case under IPC (304A-Causing death due to negligence) against the site manager and supervisor, who are absconding.
