The KSPCB has recommended the closure of the landfill at Mandur and issued a notice to the BBMP in this regard, directing the civic body to respond in 15 days’ time. This comes amidst the threat by communities living around Mandur to stop dumping of garbage from June 1.
According to a press release here on Saturday, KSPCB chairperson Vaman Acharya has also recommended to the secretary of the Urban Development Department to initiate action against BBMP officials for violation of conditions under the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000.
The release said the BBMP had identified land in Chikkanagamangalahalli, Doddabelavangala, Aruda, Togarighatta, Seegehalli, Kannahalli, Goruru and Kodiyala for taking up waste processing. Yet, there has been no change in the situation.
The KSPCB has noted that M/s Srinivas Gayathri Resource Recovery Ltd., which has been entrusted by the BBMP to scientifically process waste at one of the landfills in Mandur, had failed to make progress over the past two years. As per the MSW Rules, only 15 per cent of the garbage generated that cannot be processed or recycled should be sent to landfills. However, the BBMP has been sending more than 95 per cent of garbage to the landfills.
