Office of the Director of Kannada and Culture will be the first in the State to turn into an entirely paperless office (PLO) shortly, under the core-Mission Mode Project of National e-Governance Plan of the Centre.

Officials in the department said unlike a few offices, which claim to have become PLOs with the support of “unauthenticated e-support system”, the Department of Kannada and Culture has adopted the electronic office (e-office) system under the Central scheme. This was the first department to be chosen for the scheme in Karnataka.

Under this system, all files will be digitalised and will have an electronic trail to check their status. Compared to conventional governance, automation of files in this system can play a crucial role in improving efficiency of decision making, according to K.A. Dayanand, Director of Kannada and Culture. Its aim is to achieve “simplified, responsive, effective and transparent working,” he said.

“Hereafter, case workers cannot offer lame excuses, as senior officials can access the entire file and ascertain status of the case. Data will be secured in offices working both at the State and Centre-levels. It is not possible to hack, as it is has secured network of its own,” he said.

Over 25 computers, in addition to existing 30, have been procured and connected through Local Area Network (LAN). Office staff have been trained to use the software. With this, paper usage will drop by 90 per cent.

The State government has not spent anything on this project, as the Centre is footing the bill.

Mr. Dayanand said in the next phase, offices of Assistant Directors will be connected and files can be summoned online within seconds.

The move is a

one-stop solution to problems being faced by the public. With the click of a button, the history of an entire case will open up on the screen
