Intelligence reports misused to tip off officials

June 28, 2015 01:06 pm | Updated 01:06 pm IST - Bengaluru:

Intelligence reports compiled by the Lokayukta police intelligence wing and which are highly confidential have been misused sometimes to tip off officials who were under the Lokayukta radar and were to be raided, a senior police officer who was with the Lokayukta in the past has said.

The officer said that information would be gathered about officials in question and a list prepared before the police carry out searches. “This covert operation would be based on a complaint or a petition or a tip-off from the State intelligence wing. Gathering intelligence would take many days and officials conduct recce before submitting a detailed confidential report.”

The former Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde had earlier admitted that there was corruption in the institution itself and he had taken steps to clean the system within.

While Lokayukta authorities would chalk out the next course of action based on this information, details of the report, however, would sometimes be leaked to officials who were on the list, the officer said, and added that this information would be leaked for favours in return.

“There are many instances when officials have got the exact time and date of the raid. Sometimes, officials to be raided would even know details about the complainant or the informer.”
