The Department of Higher Education has ordered a detailed probe against Hoovu Foundation for Arts for constructing an open-air auditorium on the Government Arts College campus.
According to Higher Education Minister G.T. Deve Gowda, a preliminary inquiry revealed that the work on the auditorium was undertaken without any approval from the State government.
The Department of Kannada and Culture had given ₹60 lakh for the activities of the foundation, which is headed by Kannada actor Bhavana Ramanna. Although the work on the auditorium, started more than 10 months ago, is nearing completion, there were no documents from the government or the Department of Collegiate Education sanctioning permission for it, he said.
Several students and faculty members had opposed the construction of the auditorium, arguing that there would be very little space left on the playground for students to play.
A police complaint has been registered and a notice issued to the foundation. “We will consider appropriate legal action after the inquiry is completed,” said Mr. Gowda, and added that they would deliberate on what should be done to the structure that has come up.
