Increases possibility of lone wolf terror attacks

October 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:31 am IST - Bengaluru:

An Interpol study of the dark web revealed that it aids and makes lone-wolf terror attacks a distinct possibility.

Interpol enlisted a set of requirements to enable a lone-wolf terror strike – radicalisation, firearms, fake ID cards, criminal syndicates, payment methods – all of which are just a click away, said M.M. Oberoi, Director, Cyber Innovation and Outreach, Interpol.

“There are websites that sell firearms. One such website revealed they had a turnover of €4 million in 2014,” he said.

“You want to hack a website, they quote 1.12 bitcoins. Recently, we came across a case where the design of a nuclear power plant of a country was being sold on darknet. All payments are made with bitcoins. The FBI recently shut down around 400 websites on darknet. But most resurfaced within 24 hours,” he said.
