A security supervisor, who was arrested on the charge of sexually harassing an undergraduate student at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) on Wednesday night, had been working on the campus since 2004.

According to the police, the student, who was near the library around midnight on September 13, was accosted by Gautam Raj, who walked with her for some distance before holding her hand and making sexual advances. The student took up the matter with the internal committee for sexual harassment and notified the agency that employed Raj. The agency dismissed the guard and the Sadashivnagar police arrested him based on a complaint filed by the student.

“The person was employed as a security supervisor. He had been working with the agency and had been deputed to the library since 2004 as he was educated. He has been arrested based on the complaint given to the police and the internal committee,” a senior IISc. officer said.

Raj has been charged under Section 354A(2) of Indian Penal Code.
