HMT staff threaten to go on fast

Mazdoor Sangha claims it has obtained documents that exposed misdeeds of the management

November 12, 2013 12:25 am | Updated 12:25 am IST - BANGALORE:

Employees of the Bangalore unit of HMT Ltd, who are staging a dharna demanding payment of salaries and a probe into ‘irregularities’ by the management, have threatened to go on relay fast from November 16.

K.M. Sooryanarayana Rao, president of the Union, which is spearheading the agitation, told presspersons here on Monday that the once prestigious Central Government undertaking HMT had incurred huge losses because of mismanagement. The number of employees had fallen from 8,000 in 1992 to 600 now. He also alleged that employees, particularly office bearers of the sangha, were harassed. Two office-bearers were deputed to remote units, in violation of standing orders of the company, he said.

Holding the senior officials responsible for the company’s pathetic financial position , Mr. Rao said employees had not been getting salaries for the past three or four months.
