History of insensitive responses

October 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - BENGALURU:

Using insensitive language while talking about a heinous crime like rape is not uncommon among political leaders.

The recent remark made by K.S. Eshwarappa, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, on Saturday comes within days of Home Minister K.J. George’s statement sparking a controversy. The Minister had blamed the media for tarnishing Bengaluru’s image by focussing on rape stories to increase their TRPs. Reacting after a BPO woman employee was gang-raped in the city, Mr. George had said it could not be called “gang-rape” since only two men were involved.

Mr. Eshwarappa had reacted strongly against the Minister’s remarks, but his own statement of protest too was insensitive.

He had asked: “How would you [Home Minister] react if your daughter was raped? Would you sit idle? I don’t think the Home Minister or Chief Minister consider everyone as their own.”
