The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday set aside the appointment of K.R. Venugopal as Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University. He was appointed on June 12, 2018.

The court held that the decision of the Chancellor was contrary to Section 14(4) of the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2002 as the Chancellor had not sought “concurrence of the State government”.

Justice Alok Aradhe passed the order while allowing a petition by Sangamesh A. Patil, who was among the candidates identified by the search committee for the post. The committee also recommended Mr. Venugopal and another person.

Mr. Patil claims that the Chancellor had taken concurrence for appointment of VCs for several universities, but not for Bangalore University.

In view of several allegations against Mr. Venugopal, the then Chief Minister and Higher Education Minister recommended the petitioner's name, it has been claimed in the petition.
