The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday emphasised the need to fill up the post of the Registrar of Karnataka Lokayukta while pointing out that such an important post cannot be left vacant for long.
A Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice B.V. Nagarathna made oral observation in this regard during the hearing of a public interest litigation petition, which had questioned the government’s action of appointing an IAS officer to the post of the Registrar instead of a person from the district judge cadre.
The High Court has already stayed the August 6 Government Order posting IAS officer P.C. Jaffer to the post while observing that judicial officers functioning in the Lokayukta institution can not work under IAS officers.
When the government counsel said the matter was under consideration before the government, the Bench told the counsel that such posts could not be left vacant for a long time, and adjourned the hearing by four weeks.
