The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to make arrangements to weigh all garbage collected, to find out actual waste generated in the city.
This excercise should be conducted for 30 days from February 1 by putting in place appropriate weighing mechanism at various garbage dumping and disposal sites.
A Division Bench comprising Justice N Kumar and Justice B V Nagaratha issued directions while hearing PIL petitions complaining about garbage problem in Bangalore city.
The Court said that the actual quantum of garbage generated is an essential data based on which the authorities have to decide on requirement of processing units.
However, the Court, from the data submitted by the BBMP found that claim of about 4,000 tonnes waste generated in the city was only a roughly estimated figure as BBMP commissioner told the Court that no actual data is available in this regard.
Taking suggestions from the Commissioner, the Court directed him to categorise wards as maxium, average and below average waste generating wards and produce all the relevant data before Court after completition of weighing process
