The Jnana Bharathi police have arrested six persons in connection with the robbery at Manappuram Finance Ltd. outlet on Ring Road, near Jnana Ganga Nagar.
Addressing reporters here on Monday, city police commissioner N.S. Megharik said that a gang forced themselves into the gold outlet on October 16, threw chilli powder at the staff and made away with 16 kg of gold jewellery.
The police began the probe, with hardly any clues, and there was no CCTV footage either. Following specific information from local contacts, the police suspected that the gang was from Cottonpete and Chamarajpet area. Based on a tip off, the police arrested Dhanashekhar. His interrogation revealed the involvement of five others, who were arrested subsequently. The police were able to recover 12.9 kg gold. The hunt is on for one more person, who is said to be absconding.
Mr. Megharik urged all financial establishmnets who deal with cash and valuables to enhance their security mechanisms, including installing advanced CCTV and deploying adequate security personnel.
