Chances are that a Bangalorean who lands in Kundapura town of Udupi district will wonder if he/she has come to another State. The dialect of Kannada spoken here is so distinct that people may not quite figure it out.

Now, Bangaloreans who are curious about the dialect can get a sample of it through a film that will be released here on Friday. Gar Gar Mandla, claims to be the first commercial film made entirely in this dialect of Kannada, often referred to as ‘Kundagannada’.

Directed by Ravi Basrur and produced under the banner of Inkfinite Pictures, Gar Gar Mandla was a huge hit in the coastal region. The songs were a huge hit on YouTube even before the film was released.

“Many from the coastal belt, residing in Bangalore, have been demanding that we release the movie here as well. We are a very small team but trying hard to reach the wider diaspora,” Mr. Basrur told The Hindu . Mr. Basrur and his team, largely comprising artistes from Kundapura, wanted to make the film in their own dialect fearing it was growing increasingly distant from the younger generation. “It is an effort to keep the special dialect alive,” he said. The song ‘Entha chanda nam bhaashi/ El hooroo sikoodilla nam bhashi’ is a celebration of the dialect.

The film will have four shows in Sapna in the city starting Friday.
