A gang of four, who had robbed 18 kilograms of gold ornaments worth Rs 4.5 crore from a city-based jeweller with the help of his driver, has been nabbed.

Babu, who works as a driver for Rajesh Bhat, owner of Om Jewellers in Nagarpet, was returning to the city from Kolkata along with three other employees with finished gold jewellery. On June 6, when they stopped on the outskirts of Kolar for refreshment, Babu fled with the car and the ornaments.

While the Kolar police had taken up a case and had begun investigations, the city police managed to track down Babu's associate, Sudhakar. They were in regular touch.

Sudhakar and his associates Arun, Amjad and Mansoor were arrested from Nallur village in Chikkamagalur.

After questioning them, police recovered 17 kilograms of gold ornaments that they had buried in a cowshed.

The police have also recovered two cars used to commit the crime.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sandeep Patil said Babu is still on the run with one kilogram of gold ornaments.

City Police Commissioner M N Reddi announced a reward of Rs five lakh to the team that cracked the case.
