They have also been booked under the SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act, as the victim belongs to the SC category, due to which he was allegedly humiliated by the accused. The five students have been lodged in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.

The arrested have been identified as Karan Sharma from Rajasthan, Indrajith from Uttarakhand, Rahul Jha from Delhi, Shubhav from Uttar Pradesh and Goutham from Madhya Pradesh. All of them reside in the hostel on the premises.

The victim, who is from Maharashtra, is a first-year student. He also stayed in the hostel.

On Monday night, the seniors allegedly slapped the victim, the police said.

According to the police, they took the junior to the terrace, cut his hair and verbally abused him. The next day, the group waylaid him on the way to the college and warned him against reporting the incident.

However, the victim lodged a police complaint. Rajajinagar police conducted an inquiry along with the college authorities.

CCTV footage showed the five seniors with the junior. The seniors were remanded in judicial custody by a city court on Tuesday.

Students rusticated

The five seniors have been expelled from the hostel and rusticated for six months pending an enquiry, said Jitender, Dean and Director of ESIC Medical College and ESI Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science and Research.

“Soon after the incident was reported, our anti-ragging committee looked into the case. We do not tolerate any indiscipline in our college,” Dr. Jitender told The Hindu .
