A farmer was arrested for allegedly hurling footwear at Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly N.H. Shivashankara Reddy at Vidurashwatha village near Gouribidanur taluk of Chickballapur district on Sunday.

Mr. Reddy was alighting from the stage after a farmers’ awareness programme when Jayaram Reddy (55), from Halagenahalli village, attacked the Deputy Speaker with footwear. The enraged public trashed the farmer and handed him over to the police. He was treated at a hospital and later remanded in judicial custody.

Preliminary inquiry has revealed that Jayaram was frustrated with a family feud and wanted Mr. Reddy to intervene.

He wanted to grab Mr. Reddy’s attention, an official said.
