A portion of the false ceiling at the K.R. Market metro station collapsed on Saturday evening resulting in soil and grout falling down on the staircase leading to the concourse. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a temporary bridge had been installed at the station just above the portion of the ceiling that collapsed during the time that the station was being constructed. The bridge, which was being used for casting of the roof slab, was then dismantled. However, there was some soil with grout which had gathered within the columns of the temporary bridge which eventually dried and fell on the false ceiling.
This led to the false ceiling panels getting dislodged and the soil falling on the staircase. "This is nothing to do with the structural stability of the roof slab. The false ceiling is being re-fixed today," a BMRCL official said. The station, located on the Green Line, was opened to the public on June 18 this year.
