Actor Darshan, arrested by the city police early Friday morning on charges of assaulting and torturing his wife Vijayalakshmi, was administered glucose soon after he was taken inside the Parappana Agrahara jail in the night. He has been remanded in judicial custody for a fortnight.

The rulebook

Jail officials said the 39-year-old actor was “mentally exhausted” when he was ushered into the jail premises around 8.30 p.m. As he arrived past dinner time, he had to miss his meal. “The jail manual does not prescribe serving of dinner after 8 p.m. except during emergencies. As he was exhausted after the daylong ordeal, he was administered glucose in the ward in the jail,” an official said.

On milk and bread

Depending on his condition, undertrial No.9000 will be provided with milk and bread should the need arise, he said, emphasising the popular actor, who has a huge fan base, will be treated as an ordinary undertrial.

The security personnel accompanying Darshan had a tough time dodging the media. “Though the actor was taken away from the magistrate's residence in one car, the escort personnel had to shift him into another car en route to evade the trailing media,” an official said. Even as the media contingent waited at the main gate of the jail, Darshan was escorted in through another entrance.

He is expected to remain in jail at least till Monday when his lawyers will move the court for bail. Ms. Vijayalakshmi, who is under tremendous pressure to withdraw her complaint, is believed to have told the court her injuries were caused by a fall in the bathroom.

Meanwhile, the large crowd of Darshan's fans and supporters, who had gathered outside the Vijayanagar Police Station where the actor was lodged after his arrest in the morning, had largely dispersed by night-time. However, a handful of the faithful lingered well into the night.

Fans run riot

Earlier in the day, frenzied fans not only demanded his release from police custody but also threw stones at three BMTC buses, damaging them. The police had to use their batons to control the more unruly elements.

The city police, anticipating the arrival of Darshan's fans from different parts of Old Mysore region, are stepping up security outside the house of Ms. Vijayalakshmi's parents in Bapujinagar.
