Engineer arrested on chain-snatching charge

He may be involved in 20 cases: Police

Prabhakar, an engineer and former IT company employee who took to chain-snatching to repay loans, was caught by the police, after a hot pursuit on Friday. The police suspect that he may be involved in over 20 chain snatching incidents over the past six months.

Prabhakar, 40, from Andhra Pradesh, was living with his wife and two children in a rented house in Parappana Agrahara. According to the police, he worked in an IT company for a few years, but then quit his job to start his own printing press that supplied billboards and interiors to tech companies. However, he incurred huge losses and found himself heavily in debt. Six months ago, with creditors breathing down his neck, he decided to turn to chain snatching to pay his debts, the police said.

He would scout a neighbourhood on his motorcycle, and identified elderly woman as easy targets. “He robbed over 20 people and pawned the valuables in gold loan companies. He managed to repay ₹10 lakh in a span of six months,” a senior police officer said.

Luck ran out for Prabhakar on Friday when he was confronted by the HSR Layout patrolling police while he was speeding away after robbing a woman. The police caught him when his motorcycle hit a divider and he fell down, injured.

Head constable Malappa and his colleague detained Prabhakar and took him to the hospital from where he was taken into custody for further investigations.
