Educational institution seeks removal of electricity tower from campus

Court asks CEA to examine the possibility of shifting the tower

The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to examine and submit a report whether it is technically practical and feasible to shift a high tension electricity tower erected in the land belonging to an educational institution at Rajanakunte near Yelahanka.

Justice Vineet Kothari passed the interim order on a petition filed by Karnataka Education Society, which has set up Presidency University on the land.

The petitioner-society has claimed that as only one of the 25 towers, erected for a stretch of nine kilometres, is situated in its land, its plea for shifting can be considered keeping in mind human and public safety aspect as a large number of students are studying in the university’s campus.

Though the Power Grid Corporation, which is executing the power transmission project, opposed the plea, the court said interest of justice would be served better if the CEA re-examined the technical feasibility of shifting of one tower from the existing site belonging to the petitioner-society to any other nearby government land/private land.

The CEA, after hearing all the concerned parties on November 19, will have to submit its report. Further hearing was adjourned till November 30.
