Caught up with him after 20km pursuit

The shock of a hit-and-run may see most people stop in their tracks, but it goaded two Tumakuru residents into action and help the police catch the culprit.

Around 9.20 p.m. on Thursday, a truck ran over 21-year-old Santosh Kumar, who was riding a moped, on Outer ring Road near Goreguntepalya. Mr. Kumar died on the spot while the truck driver fled.

In many cases of hit-and-runs, the culprit gets away as CCTV camera footage is hard to come by.

However, in this case, the police received a helping hand from Girish K.N. and his friend Murali Prasad. They were driving in their car from Bengaluru to Tumakuru when they witnessed the accident.

Observing that the truck driver had fled, Girish followed the truck on National Highway 48.

The duo pursued the truck driver for nearly 20km before attempting to flag him down. They succeeded in forcing the driver to stop near Arshinakunte on the outskirts of Nelamangala. They caught hold of the driver and informed the police.

Yeshwantpur Traffic Police arrested the driver, Parameshwaraiah.

In recognition of their bravery and their prompt action, the traffic police felicitated the duo on Friday and awarded certificates of commendation.
