Driver of cash management company steals ₹99 lakh

The money was kept outside the locker, which he failed to break open, in the delivery van

The Banaswadi police are the lookout for the driver of a van of a cash management company, who is on the run with ₹99 lakh that he allegedly stole after hoodwinking the security staff on Friday.

The police said the accused Pawan, 23, is a native of Mandya. He had joined the company a week ago. He was deputed to take the vehicle with three staff to fill cash in ATMs in the east division.

The crew had reached an ICICI Bank ATM on Kammanahalli road around 4.30 p.m. The custodian of cash went inside the ATM kiosk with two gunmen.

Pawan, who was waiting in the van, drove away. The gunmen initially thought that Pawan was parking the vehicle on the road side. Later, they realised that he was fleeing with the cash. They pursued Pawan, but he managed to escape.

The gunmen alerted the police, who found the vehicle abandoned near Lingarajapura flyover.

Pawan had tried to open the locker containing the cash. Unable to do so, he took ₹99 lakh that was kept outside the locker, the police said.

The police are examining CCTV footage to track him down. “We have some clues about his whereabouts. We are confident that he will be nabbed soon,” said Rahul Kumar Shahpurwad, DCP (East division).

The company had conducted a background verification before appointing Pawan. He does not have a criminal record, a senior police officer said.

But there were lapses on the part of the staff, as the Standard Operating Procedure was not followed while handling cash, the officer added.
