Dismissed Home Guard among 3 held for robbery

The Ramanagara police on Wednesday arrested three men, one of whom had been dismissed from the Home Guard, for allegedly targeting couples on NICE Road by posing as Central Crime Branch sleuths. “They had even purchased handcuffs from an e-commerce company, and would ‘arrest’ couples,” said a police officer, adding that the gang would take videos of the couples and force them to pay if they wanted to avoid being locked up.

Based on a complaint, the police zeroed in on Raghu M., 33, the former Home Guard, and his associates Ravish and Venkatagiri Gowda. “The men would scout for unmarried couples, identify themselves as CCB officers and handcuff them. They would force the victims into a car under the pretext of arrest for immoral activities and extort money,” said Anup A. Shetty, SP, Ramanagaram.

A few days ago, while forcing a couple into their car, the accused were confronted by an actual police team. Sensing trouble, the accused left the victims and sped away. Based on physical description by the victims, the police picked up Raghu, who had been arrested in the past in a similar case.

Mr. Shetty appealed to citizens to demand identification if someone approached them claiming to be the police.
