Locating an address will no longer be difficult as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has taken the digital road with the launch of DiGi7, a system that provides a seven-digit unique identification to properties across the city.

The new system, launched by Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George on Thursday, was developed inhouse, by a team led by Special Commissioner (IT) Manoj Rajan. The BBMP has already assigned unique IDs to around 19 lakh properties, spread over 800 sq.km. This number, which is alphanumeric, will be the permanent identifier for its location, be it property type, owner, ward boundary, etc.

Citizens will be able to use DiGi7 to identify properties, get directions and navigate to an address, and share the details via SMS, WhatsApp or other mobile applications. The shared locations can be saved as a bookmark on the app. At a later stage, citizens can use DiGi7 for service requests from the BBMP, such as grievance reporting, utility servicing or applying for building plans.

BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad said that in the first phase, all properties under the property tax net have been covered. In the second phase, properties under the Bengaluru Development Authority will be identified. “The system was developed mainly to put in place a uniform numbering system in the entire city,” said Mr. Manjunath.

Mr. Rajan told The Hindu that this new digital addressing system has brought in standardisation. When citizens pay their property tax for 2018-19, the receipt will bear the property’s digital ID. The BBMP will also put up unique digital numbers at prominent locations within localities, which will help other residents locate an address with ease, he added.
