The State-run Minto Ophthalmic Hospital reported the first grievous eye injury this festive season on Saturday. Venkatesh, 6, who was watching people bursting crackers near his house in Vadarapalli, near Mylasandra, was hit by a bijli cracker in his left eye.

The boy has developed an epithelial defect with corneal edema and anterior dislocation of lens. “He has suffered a retinal detachment and has poor and guarded prognosis. He has been admitted for management and is likely to have poor vision,” a hospital source said.

Another boy, aged 8, was rushed from T. Dasarahalli to Narayana Nethralaya in Rajajinagar late in the evening. He was also a bystander and has suffered corneal abrasion. He is under observation.
