The death toll in the collapse of a temporary shed at a construction site in Sampigehalli on Sunday rose to five after two more succumbed to their injuries on Monday.

According to the police, over 300 labourers from West Bengal, Jharkhand and other areas were working at the under-construction residential apartment in Chokkanahalli, built by R.R. Signature Construction Company.

The labourers were put up in a makeshift shed adjacent to the residential complex.

Due to heavy rain on Sunday, the shed collapsed and several were trapped inside. Other labourers, with the help of Fire and Emergency Services personnel and the local police, rescued hundreds of people. However, three died on Sunday.

The five victims are Ajith Pradhan (46), Mithun (19), Dulal (23), Shankar Mondal (37) and Tutal Mondal (23). Eight more persons sustained severe injuries and have been admitted to the Ambedkar Medical College.

The labourers were not provided a secure shelter to stay, Vikas Kumar Vikas, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East) said here on Monday.

Mr. Vikas said the police have booked the owner of the construction company, site engineer, project manager and safety supervisor under various sections of the IPC for causing death due to negligence, among others.
