They have been questioned by the police

The police, on Thursday, booked three officials of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and a contractor a day after a 26-year-old labourer was buried alive while laying a sanitary pipe at Rajarajeshwarinagar. Two other labourers were rescued by fire personnel and locals after a wall collapsed on the trio.

According to the police, BWSSB assistant executive engineers Sneha and Navneeth Kumar, assistant engineer Dilip, and the contractor Naveen were summoned for questioning. No arrests have been made.

“We have sought complete details about the project from the BWSSB. After taking statements from officials, we will initiate action,” said DCP (West) Ravi. D. Channannavar.

The police have taken up a case of death due to negligence following allegations that the deceased, Muthu Madiwalappa, and the other workers were not provided safety equipment.

According to BWSSB officials, the side wall of the trench they were digging for laying a 600mm pipeline collapsed on them.

One of the survivors had said that water pressure from the adjacent drain may have increased, loosening the mud, causing Muthu, who was standing in the trench, to ‘sink’ in the slush.

The police are investigating the exact cause of the landslip.
