Richmond Road flyover, which is one of the city’s busiest, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. There have been numerous incidents of vehicles, including two-wheelers and autorickshaws, taking illegal U-turns on the flyover by damaging the median.
To stop this violation, the Wilson Garden traffic police has once again closed the median with concrete.
“Even after complaints, fix-ups and a film based on the practice (the Kannada film U-turn ), motorists don’t seem to have learnt a lesson. It is extremely dangerous to take a U-turn on the flyover. Also, it results in traffic jams,” said Sandeep J., a regular commuter.
Sudhir, who works in a nearby software firm, said a few unruly motorists had damaged the concrete median to take a U-turn. “This is an act of clear disregard for traffic rules and safety.”
Anupam Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic (East), told The Hindu, “After recent complaints, Inspector Chandrakala M.B. from Wilson Garden fixed the divider. Maintaining and rebuilding the median has become a routine job for us. The only way to stop people from violating traffic rules is to educate them,” he said.
