‘Cylinder blast caused explosion at temple’

December 02, 2013 11:48 pm | Updated 11:48 pm IST - Bangalore:

The blast at Durga Parameshwari temple in Banashankari on Sunday is due to a cylinder blast, police investigation has revealed.

The blast had led to much speculation. The explosion was initially suspected to be sabotage. However, police summoned a team of officials from Forensic Science Laboratory, who ruled out the presence of explosive materials at the site.

Police said the temple priest Manjunath Bhatt reportedly confessed that it was a cylinder blast.

Mr. Bhatt told the police that a gas stove was kept in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple to prepare “prasadam”. Since the room did not have proper ventilation, the gas leakage had triggered the blast, the police said.

But Mr. Bhatt, along with few members of the temple trust, shifted the cylinder from the spot and feigned ignorance.
