Court notice to State, KUSMA

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered issue of notice to the State government on a PIL petition seeking inquiry into the non-admission of students from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Backward Class communities in schools affiliated to the Karnataka Unaided School Management Association (KUSMA).

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice Aravind Kumar passed the order while hearing the petition filed by S. Vasudeva, an advocate, challenging the recent call given by KUSMA for closure of schools to protest against the government’s decision to implement the provisions of the Right to Education Act from the current academic year.

As KUSMA withdrew its call to close schools on Wednesday, the Bench decided to consider the plea seeking inquiry into the non-admission.

The petitioner alleged that the government was not verifying whether schools were following the provisions of the RTE Act. While ordering issue of notice to KUSMA, the Bench adjourned further hearing till August 23.
