Four armed men murdered the husband of a BBMP councillor near Muneshwara temple in Cottonpet on Wednesday.

The victim S. Kadiresh, 47, is the husband of Rekha Kadiresh of the BJP, who represents Chalavadipalya ward. “He was named in several criminal cases,” said a police officer.

According to the police, around 3.45 p.m., Kadiresh was supervising preparations for the upcoming Shivarathri festival when he was attacked with machetes and knives.

His brother Suresh, along with bystanders, shifted him to Victoria Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

A witness and Suresh have identified two of the attackers. “Kadiresh had a tiff with one of the attackers, Naveen, over an elopement case” said the police.

"We have formed four special teams to nab the assailants,” said DCP M.N. Anucheth (west).

Former deputy chief minister R. Ashoka said that the murder was another in a long series of murders of BJP workers. “There is a clear breakdown of law and order in the State. The home department has failed to prevent political murders and this latest murder only proves this point,” he said.
