The Janata Dal (Secular) will not field its candidates in the coming elections to the State Legislative Council from local bodies in five districts. The party has decided against fielding candidates in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Bidar, Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts, where it has little presence.
JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda told presspersons on Monday that the party’s presence would not make any impact in these five districts, even if it fields its candidates. “Our party candidates will contest from the rest of the 25 districts where the party is still a force to reckon with,” he said.
The JD(S) will, however, field its candidates for all seats in the elections to zilla and taluk panchayats slated to take place in January. Party’s State president H.D. Kumaraswamy will kick-start his campaign from Belagavi, he said.
Mr. Gowda welcomed the judgement by the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court on striking down the National Judicial Appointment Commission for appointment of judges.
