The Government's decision to relocate the Head Office of the Department of Collegiate Education — Administration (DCE) from the century-old heritage building on Seshadri Road near K.R. Circle has invited the wrath of its staff.
On Tuesday, teachers of private and Government-aided colleges held a protest in front of DCE against the move to accommodate the Office of the Chief Election Commissioner of Karnataka, National Election Commission of India, in the building.
Prime location
“We have submitted several representations to many [in the administration], including the Chief Minister and the Higher Education Minister, but to no avail. The department is strategically located now as it is close to Bangalore University (Central College campus), many government colleges and the University Grants Commission office,” said H. Prakash, president of the Karnataka Government College Teachers' Association.
Tourism Department too
The teachers, who say they are on an indefinite protest, also expressed their anger over the proposal to give the remaining part of the four acre-land (the building is built on a part of it) to the Karnataka Tourism Department.
“The earlier proposal was to build a corporate office for our department on the vacant side of the plot. Now they are not giving us even that,” said Mr. Prakash.
