Repeated complaints about recurring fires and indiscriminate dumping at the illegal landfill in Kundalahalli has spurred the civic body into action.

Last week, The Hindu reported about a fire at the illegal landfill surrounded by tech parks and IT campuses, near Kundalahalli lake. Since then, the local volunteer group — Kundalahalli Pathway — has had two rounds of meetings with the BBMP officials.

The officials have cleared a pathway near the lake, and have assured the local volunteer group that police complaints will be lodged against owners of the property for allowing an illegal landfill to come up on the site. The civic body has also initiated the process of appointing four marshals to keep a watch in the area to ensure that garbage is not dumped on the site.

Akhilesh Mishra from Kundalahalli Pathway said that while the garbage from the pathway has been cleared, the area has not been barricaded. “A group of volunteers were in touch with the BBMP to get the footpath nearby, used by hundreds of employees from IT campuses and tech parks, cleaned,” he said. The volunteer group is keen on getting the BBMP to install more CCTV cameras as a deterrent.

The group is also working with the Whitefield Export Promotion Park Industrial Association (WEPPIA) to procure 100 bins that will be distributed to roadside vendors and create awareness on the need to segregate at source. WEPPIA, too, is working on a garbage collection plan for the EPIP area, besides coordinating with the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) for construction of a pathway over the raja kaluve (big storm-water drain) next to VK Tech Park in the area.
