The India Diabetes Care Index (iDCI TM ) has revealed that the three-month average blood sugar control (HbA1c level) of people with diabetes in Bengaluru is 8.39% against the recommended target of less than 7%. India on the whole is also found to be at an average HbA1c of 8.51%, according to a press release issued here on Friday.

Nearly 80% of the people with diabetes in India have HbA1c above the recommended level leading to over 3.14 crore cases of micro and macro vascular complications such as heart, eye, kidney, nerve and limb disease, the analysis has found.

K.M. Prasanna Kumar, who runs the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrine Care in Bengaluru, said as many people may not even be aware of their health status, there is a wide gap between the actual incidence of diabetes and reported cases. “As doctors, we are committed to providing our patients the best outcomes and we hope more people will realise the necessity of managing diabetes early and managing it well,” he said.

“With 4.14 million people with diabetes in Karnataka, the iDCI TM provides a direction and solution-oriented approach for all health care partners to align themselves in changing diabetes,” said Vageesh Ayyar, Professor and Head of Endocrinology at St. John’s Medical College and Hospital.
