The city’s child helpline has rescued as many as 1,221 children, who were subjected to various forms of harassment, between April and September 2018. Vasudeva Sharma, nodal director of Child Line, said that abuse included physical abuse, forced begging, denial of medical treatment, child labour and child marriage.
Elaborating on the operations of Child Line, he said that between April and September, Child Line has attended to 1,506 cases. To mark Children’s Day, the helpline has launched 'Childline se Dosti', a week-long campaign to create awareness on the work it does.
NGOs and the Railway Childline working for child rights in the city have rescued 982 children from two major railway stations in the city — Yeshwantpur and Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna City Railway Station. Out of the children rescued, 975 were runaways.
Mr. Sharma said, “We are reaching out to various sections of the society to make 1098 hepline more popular in every neighbourhood. During the campaign, programmes will be conducted in various parts of the city where people will also be sensitised about child rights.”
